Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2012

If you are in Phuket between 15th October and 23rd October 2012, you may like to experience the historic Phuket Vegetarian Festival. The festival dates back over 150 years back to the Chinese tin mining community. In the wake of a malaria epidemic (in the 9th lunar month of the Chinese calendar),  the local community strictly followed a Chinese tradition which including refraining from eating meat, alcohol, lying, arguing and sex. As a result the malaria epidemic subsided. This provided the basis for the Phuket Vegetarian Festival which is observed every 9th Lunar calendar month continuing until the present day.

More on the history of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival can be found in this post ....

The modern day Vegetarian Festival is filled with colorful ceremonies, street processions and fascinating traditions. Participants will perform ceremonies to summon the Gods and to bring them into existence. You will witness participants in the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, fire walking and piercing their faces and bodies with sharp knives and household objects. Participants believe that they are acting as mediums for the Gods and thus blood shed and scarring of the body will be minimal.

If you would like to witness this incredible festival, Phuket Tour Guides can take you there. You will be assigned a tour guide who will take you through this historic local festival.
