Khao Phra Thaeo National Park

Located in the North of the island, Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, is last area of virgin rain forest in Phuket. The beautiful Park covers an area of approximately 22 square kilometres. In the National Park you will find two breathtaking waterfalls, hiking paths and the incredible Gibbon Rehabilitation centre.

An eight kilometre hiking route heads north-east, through the National Park. At the end of this energetic hike you will reach the largest waterfall in Phuket -- Bang Pae. Here you will also be greeted with a floating restaurant, a museum and an information centre.

The three highest peaks of this conservation reserve are the Khao Prathiu (384 m), Khao Bang Pae (388 m) and Khao Phara (422 m).

The National Park, is home to tusked wild boar, malay sun bear (almost extinct), langurs, gibbons, deer, palm civets, monkeys, pythons, monitor lizards, flying foxes, squirrels, slow lorises and many different species of birds. The natural behaviour of the animals in the park, is to hide amongst the dense vegetation. The presence of humans makes the animals even more elusive. You will no doubt hear the animals hiding undercover in the vegetation but will have little chance of seeing them. The denseness of the vegetation makes obstructs the view of observers.



The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, cares for abandoned Gibbons and rehabilitates them for life back in the wild. The Center is located in the eastern section of the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, close to the Bang Pae Waterfall. A Gibbon is a pretty, furry, kind of small monkey, who naturally lives high up in jungle trees.

Unfortunately, many Gibbons are captured and kept in households, bars or restaurants to entertain tourists. Sadly, when the Gibbons reach maturity, at around 5-6 years of age and become aggressive, they are abandoned. The Project aims to rescue these Gibbons and rehabilitate them so they can return to their natural jungle environment. Your visit to the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, will certainly be fascinating.
