Ko Samui Travel Information


Ko Samui (Thai: เกาะสมุย) is a tropical island situated in the Surat Thani Province. It lies at around 35km North-East of Surat Thai Town and around 700km South of Bangkok (80 minute flight). The beautiful island is surrounded by 60 other islands, notable examples include Ko Pha-ngan and Ko Tao. Koh Samui is the third largest island covering an area of approximately 228.7 km². Ko Samui is circular in shape, it's width being around 15km. The population of Koh Samui was estimated to be 47,874 in 2006.

Ko Samui is a tropical haven for many holiday makers, wanting to relax in stunning surroundings. Here they will find beautiful white stretches of sand and warm turquoise waters. The island is unique in the fact that it provides a tropical atmosphere with a cosmopolitan twist. Ko Samui is very popular with holiday makers from around the work, therefore promoting the international feel to the island.

The weather on Ko Samui is almost always beautiful. For perfect tropical weather the best time to visit Ko Samui is between late December to March. The island temperatures tend to soar between the months of April and June. The wet season on Ko Samui runs generally from mid-October to early December.

Administratively, Ko Samui is a district (Thai: amphoe) of Surat Thani Province. The province is divided into 7 subdistricts (Thai: tambon). These districts are; Ang Thong, Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam, Na Mueang, Maret, Bo Phut and Mae Nam.

The old capital of Ko Samui is Nathon, which is located on the South-West coast of the island. It is the main port for fishing and also inter-island transport. This quaint area is small enough to walk everywhere eliminating the need for transport.

Ko Samui offers many beautiful beaches. The most popular beach on the island is Chaweng Beach. This beach covers a large area on the North-East coast of Ko Samui. It has been developed into a tourist resort town. Approximately 100 meters back from the sands, is a 1 way beach road packed with restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, tailors, souvenir shops, markets and night clubs. You will never be without something to do or see.

1.- Big Buddha


An impressive 12 metre high statue of the Buddha can be found at the peak of the dragon steps at Wat Phra Yai.


2.- Wat Khunaram


At the Wat Khunaram you will find on display the mummified body of Loung Pordaeng, a monk who died in a meditating position.


3.- Muay Thai Boxing

You will find regular Muay Thai boxing bouts at Ko Samui's 2 stadiums in Chaweng and Lamai.


4.- Ko Samui Animal Attractions


Ko Samui is home to a number of animal attractions for you to enjoy. The attractions include; a crocodile farm, elephant trekking center, snake farm, aquarium, butterfly gardens and monkey theaters. All of these attractions are ideal for fun family days out.


5.- Ang Thong National Marine Park


Enjoy a day out at the beautiful marine park. This is ideal for people of all ages. Boats leave for this tour on a regular basis - several times per day - from Na Thon.


6.- Ko Pha-ngan Full Moon Party

The legendary full moon party takes place each lunar month. This is extremely popular with international tourists. Individuals traveling from Ko Samui, can take the inter-island boat transportation to get to the nearby party island.
